Make ’em sweat – what we’d like to say to, well, everybody

You can help me. I hear what so many security executives, government workers, and business unit managers say about security providers – I write some of it and I tell some of it to the vendors to try to make them better.  But let’s open up the dialog a bit further.  Post a comment here or send me an email with your gripe.

What the thing that irks you the most about security system integrators and dealers?

Which manufacturer is the most annoying – either because of their clueless marketing, crappy support, or lackluster products?

What do you really think about the security trade magazines?  Which ones hit the garbage can the fastest?

The lack of a truly “national” integrator of physical security systems (not just intrusion, but access controls, cctv, etc). We have clients with facilities around the country and the world that want to take advantage of single-source providers. BUT, service from one “national” integrator around the country is spotty at best, and local office P&L requirements almost always drive their priorities … even if the smaller job is part of a “national account”, the local office doesn’t see the big picture or have any motivation to prioritize it.
The National Account Managers tend to have little authority or influence over the local office managers, and although they are always helpful in conversation, rarely have the leverage to get things done. Is it really so difficult to provide weekly updates on a national integration project? You would think not…
There are only a few companies that can claim to have a national footprint, and none of them have effective National Accounts. At least none that we’ve found yet.

I know what you mean, Brandon. Even ADT which promotes its doghouse-bound marketing message – We do it all – does not have much of a track record at supporting truly national accounts. Some regional integrators have national accounts and the best of these guys will have a network of partners that can service the client in their respective regions.

For any of you curious about the tally coming to my private email…so far complaints about vendors have been scattered widely with the only trend being that nobody seems to like anything about GE Security. (Perhaps I’ll print a digest of these comments…)

We are in process of having the GE (HSR) system installed but need to know right away, within a day actually, if there are problems with the system. We cant get our money back if we don’t act right away.
The setup seems good but there must be some problems, as you note in your post above. What are the problems?

Lew, i don’t think any reader of this blog can help you out in this forum. Without knowing exactly what you are installing, one what platforms, and for what precise uses, we cannot possibly help. Sorry.
